Jacob Schekman Julio Leal English 1A 6 July 2009 How to Better a Community; Step One: College Students â€Å"I went to a large state school – the University of Illinois – and during my time there, I became one of the best two or three foosball players in the Land of Lincoln. I learned to pass deftly between my rigid players, to play the corners, to strike the ball like a cobra would strike something a cobra would want to strike. I also mastered the dart game called Cricket, and the billiards contest called Nine-ball. I became expert at whiffle ball, at backyard archery, and at a sport we invented that involved one person tossing roasted chickens from a balcony to a group us waiting below. Dave Eggers talks about his volunteering experiences while in college: â€Å"I volunteered a few times in Urbana-Champaign – at a Y.M.C.A. and at a home for senior citizens – and in both cases it was much too easy to quit. I thought the senior home smelled odd, so I left, and though the Y.M.C.A. was a perfect fit, I could have used nudging – nudging the university might have provided. Just as parents and schools need to foster in young people a â€Å"reading habit† – a love of reading that becomes a need, almost an addiction – colleges are best-poised to create in their students a lifelong commitment to volunteering even a few hours a month† (Dave Eggers 583). Most students just don’t feel the need to volunteer in the community. Some feel they need more study time, and others just want more recreational time. They don’t realize the benefits of working for their local community. Since Eggers experienced this first hand, he knows that a college or university needs to require its students to have a certain number of community service hours before graduating in order to have the students gain the benefits from service-learning. A university cannot simply expect its student to seek out the work themselves; the students need some form of motivation. Minorities and their supporters in the late 1960s gave birth to the implementation of what is now known as Affirmative Action (AA) at institutions of higher education. This mark in history was viewed as a great effort to integrate minorities into society through the use of preferences in college and university admissions. Lately when addressing AA people have begun to question its cause and if it truly is a positive force for change. However, AA has not always been shrouded in a veil of suspicion. In fact, questioning of whether AA fails to successfully place students in institutions where they can succeed is fairly recent. The doubting of AA comes from what is called mismatching. Next thing you know there Is Information coming at you through numerous open links and you find yourself closing pop-ups as quickly as new ones appear. This unnecessary work can be very stressful and overwhelming. D. E. We are fortunate to have developed continuity binders in my unit. They come in handy when there is no overlap in a position or someone has taken extended emergency leave. Staying organized can save a lot of time in a society that depends heavily on the internet. Outlook can synchronize them so that they can come back and read them later. Knowing how to use networked tools should make your life easier; however you must be willing to want to learn the new technology. Marks, O. State, â€Å"Machines communicate at ever more sophisticated levels with each other in bombarding us with information your time commitment can be significant. The flow of networked information into and through organization can be overwhelming, however, individuals must learn how to Just deal with what is coming their way and show initiative that they are willing to learn how these networked tools work to help them be organized, save time and be less overwhelmed. Networked information is like the news it reports what people want to hear and what the individual chooses to listen to, what people decide to take in is up to the individual to control how they are going to react. Steps taken to fight terrorism should be in compliance with the human rights law. This is the responsibility of the states[2]. Further The Human Rights Act 1998 (Designated Derogation) Order 2001 (SI2001/3644) has committed to formulating measures to ensure that there is admiration for rights related to human beings for all and the rule of law as the basis of the struggle against terror campaign. This is ensured through the adoption of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy by the General Assembly[3]. The member states focus is to address the conditions that have favored the increase of terrorism, such as lack of rule of law and contraventions of rights related to human beings, and make sure that any steps taken to counter terrorism complies with the international law, particularly, human rights standards, civilized law, and immigrant law. In the year, 2005, The World Summit Outcome, considered the query of deference to human rights while combating terror campaign and decided that international co-operation to fight terrorism must be concluded in compliance with the foreign law. Emphasis is laid on the States that, they should guarantee that the procedures taken to combat violence must fulfill the commitments planted in the International Human Rights Law.
